Text for Instagram Story Highlight Covers

A highlight cover on a phone is roughly 70 pixels wide. Whatever text you put on it has to survive that size, and most decorative styles do not. This is the one place where the constraint is severe enough to change the design decision.

How many characters fit

At a comfortable size, five to seven characters. At a squeeze, nine. Anything longer either wraps into unreadable fragments or shrinks below the point where letterforms are distinguishable. "Travel" works. "Travel Diaries" does not.

Styles that survive the size

• Bold or Sans Bold. Weight is what remains visible when everything else is lost to scale.
• Monospace. Even spacing keeps the label legible and looks deliberate.
• Small caps. Quiet, but the even height holds up well.

Styles that do not

Cursive is the first casualty: at 70 pixels the strokes merge into a blob. Gothic and outline styles lose their internal detail and start to look like texture. Strikethrough and underline become visual noise at that size.

Keep the row consistent

A highlight row is read as a set, not as individual covers. Two rules keep it coherent: use the same style for every cover, and use the same character count where possible. If one label is six characters and the next is eleven, the row looks accidental even if every cover is technically fine.

Contrast beats decoration

A dark cover with white bold text at maximum size will outperform a decorated cover every time. The cover is not where you demonstrate taste — it is a navigation element, and navigation should be boring and fast.

Accessibility note

Highlight covers are images, not text, so screen readers read the highlight name field, not the cover. That means the cover can be decorative without hurting accessibility, but the name field should stay in plain text so it can be announced and searched. Decorative covers plus plain names is the safest combination.
